Kraus KHU100-30 Kitchen Sink Stainless Steel Product Review

As I was searching around and finding the best kitchen sinks, I realised that one sink frequently came up as a top recommendation – Kraus KHU100-30 Kitchen Sink. Sure, the sink is a stainless steel undermount sink which is the most household common sink so lots of people like it, but I was curious to know what exactly makes this sink stand out from the rest.

If you’re like me, read on to find out my thoughts and review of the raved Kraus KHU 100-30 kitchen sink.

Things to consider before buying a kitchen sink

Before getting into the sink proper, there are a few things to consider to know if a stainless steel undermount kitchen sink is perfect for you.

Material

Stainless steel sinks are great choices for practical households looking for a functional and stylish sink that won’t break your wallet. The lightweight of the material makes it suitable for most cabinetry without additional interior cabinet support. An added benefit is the material is very durable, easy to clean and maintain.
The sink is also corrosion and rust resistant, but is prone to scratches. While most sinks have a protective finishing layer against scratches marks, regular users can expect minor scratches to appear within months of use.

Mounting

Many households opt for an undermount sink installation, where the rim of the sink is underneath the countertop surface. This is useful for homeowners who are looking for a hygienic and easy to clean sink, as water and mould will not collect at the corners connecting the countertop and sink.

Undermount sinks may need additional support as the weight is not fully sitting on the countertop, though this is rarely an issue for stainless steel sinks due to its lighter weight.

Undermount sinks are generally more difficult to replace as opposed to drop-in sinks, as current cabinetry needs to have the correct setup for sink usage. Installation costs of undermount sinks is generally higher than top-in sinks, driving up cost.

For households looking to replace their sink frequently and less concerned about the sink appearance, consider getting a drop-in sink instead.

Who is it good for?

I would recommend stainless steel undermount sinks for homeowners who want to achieve an affordable, durable and highly functioning sink to match a clean, contemporary design in their home. This combination works especially well if you currently have a countertop with white, brown or shades of gray as it helps the sink to stand out well.

For homeowners who are sensitive to noise and want to achieve a “zen” feel in their home, this sink may not be the best choice. Stainless steel sinks tend to be louder than other sinks due to its lightweight, and the sound of running water and dishes hitting the sink can be frustrating for some. Instead, these homeowners should consider sinks made of denser materials such as fireclay, copper and composite granite which have much better sound absorbing capabilities.

I would also not recommend homeowners looking for a vibrant sink(any colour besides gray) to get a stainless steel sink. The finishes on these sinks are usually shades of gray, and while some sinks have offered black stainless steel sinks, you can expect a majority of them to be silver with varying textures. Instead, copper sinks with the hammered texture and polished brown look may be more suitable.

Key features of the Kraus KHU100-30

The Kraus KHU100-30 Kitchen Sink, 30 Inch, Stainless Steel is an undermount, 16- gauge stainless steel sink manufactured by Kraus, a leading kitchen sink manufacturer that has been around for over 12 years. The sink is a large and deep oversized single bowl that can accommodate many dirty dishes, making it easy to do cleaning without making a mess. The sink also has the key qualities of a high-quality sink, such as a 16-gauge stainless steel (our recommended gauge), soundproofing around the sink and commercial grade satin finishing.

The KHU100-30 is a good choice for larger families and households who hold gatherings and parties regularly due to the size of the bowl. On the other hand, smaller households with 3 people or less, or with a smaller kitchen space may want to consider a smaller sink to make room for more cabinet and countertop room.

Features & Benefits

Company – Kraus

Kraus is a company that has been around since 2007, specialising in kitchen, bathroom sinks and faucet manufacturing. They have over 100,000 square feet of warehouse space across the West and East Coast of USA. The success of the company makes it reassuring that their limited lifetime warranty will be honoured and the scale shows they are likely to have good quality manufacturing facilities.

Functionality

The sink is great at catering for larger families and gatherings with its width and depth. I personally love single bowl sinks as it gives you the ability to maximise the space given, as opposed to double-bowls where the middle section can feel like wasted space. The sink also has a sloped bottom to allow for easy water drainage while the corners are edged to allow for easy cleaning.
While this is so, I would have loved to see some in-built features such as a cutting board or drying rack that allows you use the sink for food preparation as well. The sink takes up quite a bit of space so it’ll be nice to be able to doubly utilise the sink area to do other tasks.

Packaging

The packaging for the sink is great, with layers of thick cupboard, styrofoam pieces to protect the sink for dents as well as mounts to keep the sink in place during transportation. The sink also has a large, black protectant bag to give that extra bit of protection to make sure that the sink arrives in pristine condition. The extra care taken to make sure that the unpacking experience is delightful for customers is a nice value-add.

Aesthetics

The sink has small radius corners and grooves that give the sink a contemporary look. As the sink is an undermount sink, it looks amazing when paired together with a marble countertop as it allows the silver of the sink to shine through.

Finishing

The finishing used is a commercial grade satin finish with a dulled texture, making it useful for masking scratches. With that said, this finishing may not be ideal for users who are looking to make the kitchen sink as a kitchen centerpiece.

Sound-Proofing

The sink has amazing sound dampening with SoundGuard overcoating and extra thick paddings that cover over 80% of the sink. While most stainless steel sinks come with sound absorbing pads, most have less coverage and thickness as this sink.

Variations

This sink has many width sizes that you can choose from, ranging from the 17 inches with a 8” base to 30 inches with a 10” base. The KHU100-30 (30 inch) has the choice of different colours including Chrome and Matte Black .

However, the variations from stainless steel are priced significantly higher, so be sure to check it out when making your choice.

Installation of Kraus KHU100-30

The sink can be installed easily as the sink is 21.2 pounds, so one person will be able to do the installation. The sink also comes with attachment clips and can be easily DIY-ed by following the instructions manual or hiring a plumber.

Do note that the sink is rather wide and deep so handling the sink could prove to be challenging for some. Also be sure to make sure that your cabinet has enough height for this sink.

ZUHNE 32 Inch Double Bowl Under Mount 16 Gauge Stainless Kitchen Sink for 36 Inch Cabinet (60/40)

The ZUHNE 32 inch double bowl is a great alternative for people who are looking for a double-bowl variation of the KHU100-30 with the same high quality. The sink has a 60/40 split which makes it easy to do the dishes by placing the dirty dishes on one end and soapy water in the other. Not to worry, this double-bowl sink has the same 10-inch depth so there is still enough room to contain water splashing and place large pots and skillets.
This buy includes useful accessories including a bottom-grid, over-the-sink 2 piece colander set, sponge holders and strainers, while maintaining a competitive price to other stainless steel kitchen sinks in the market.

Ruvati 30-inch Undermount 16 Gauge Stainless Steel Kitchen Sink Single Bowl – RVM4250

Ruvati 30-inch Undermount 16 Gauge Stainless Steel Kitchen Sink Single Bowl - RVM4250

The Ruvati 30-inch Undermount (RVM4250) is a great option for homeowners who are looking for a more affordable option of a similar quality to the KHU100-30. This sink comes with a shorter depth of 9”, which makes it more suitable for users with cabinetry that is lower.
This sink also has a more pronounced curvature at the corners, making it easier to clean as opposed to the KHU100-30, but this requires a cutting over the counter top that is of a similar cut to fit well.

Conclusion

All in all, this sink is a great functioning product that is a great addition to many households. The high-quality material, care placed into the delivery as well as durability of the product has helped it earn its place as a highly rated product among many of its past users.

The sink is suitable for both new homeowners as well as users looking to remodel their kitchen due to its standard size, though some care should be taken on the depth of the sink. Hope you enjoyed this review and be sure to check this product out for yourself!
